Repost: University of British Columbia, Canada Undergraduate Scholarship (Deadline- Dec. 10th, 2015)

About University of British Columbia

As one of the world’s leading universities, the University of British Columbia creates an exceptional learning environment that fosters global citizenship, advances a civil and sustainable society, and supports outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada, and the world.

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, recognized achievement in fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sports, debating or creative writing, or external academic competitions and examinations

International Leader of Tomorrow Award-winners receive an award-level commensurate with their financial need as determined by the costs of their tuition, fees and living costs, minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs. A standard needs-assessment is made, based on financial information provided by students and their families.

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the student achieves satisfactory academic standing in their faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian study permit (visa).

Eligibility

Award candidates must be nominated by the high school they are currently attending, recently graduated from, or the college/university they are transferring from. To be considered for an International Leader of Tomorrow Award, students must:
  • be applying for their first undergraduate degree
  • be admissible to the first choice program they are applying to, including meeting UBC’s English Language Admission Standard
  • have an excellent academic record (at least an “A” average or equivalent standard)
  • be an international student, who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, and who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit (visa)
  • demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a UBC degree
  • be entering a UBC undergraduate degree program from a recognized secondary school, college or other university

Nomination

When students are confirmed for nomination by their school, college, or university, their institution must use the International Leader of Tomorrow Award nomination package.

Deadline
Nomination packages must be postmarked by December 10, 2015. Nominees must also complete the online application for academic admission to UBC by December 10, 2015 and meet the UBC English Language Admission Requirement by February 15, 2016.

Although applicants to UBC can specify two program choices in their application for admission, an award nomination will be considered only in relation to the nominee's first choice program.
Early application is encouraged, to ensure an application decision can be made in time for nomination consideration.

Did you earn a 3rd Class degree in the University?

For many people, holding a 3rd class degree is a disappointment. First of all, what is the purpose of going to the university and earning a degree?  getting a good job right after. right?.

"Well employers only look for the best graduates to employ, I mean who would employ a 3rd class graduate when there are 1st class and 2:1's out there. There is a less chance at getting a good job, except the miserly paying, time consuming , and extremely boring jobs outside the city. Oh dear"

If you are a 3rd class graduate, there is a very good chance that that could be your line of thinking. I am also a 3rd class degree holder, though it shows only on my transcript. My overall GPA came to 49.99, but was rounded up to 50 as a compensated pass. On my degree certificate, it shows a 2:2. However, I am more comfortable with  the 3rd class, and I wouldn't have minded that to be printed on my degree certificate. Reason being that 3rd class is the truest reflection of my skills and abilities, it shows my truest academic standing. And hey, I am proud of that.

I am proud of that because I had a good time at the University. 3rd class degrees do not also mean that employers will look down on you. Simply because it is a generally agreed concept that degrees only, or degree classifications only, do not reflect the whole skills and abilities of graduates. In fact, it is only a fraction of one's abilities. So, employers look for so many abilities, including extra-curricular interests, and put them up together in order to know the true standing of  the applicants against their selection criteria, before they reach decisions on the right employees to employ.

Therefore, since 3rd class is not a curse, let's raise our heads up high, and face the world. Still, if you cannot do that, there are so many options available to have a second shot at improving on your degree. You can take professional courses, and along the line, maybe half way through, you can gain a degree in a far lesser time, and more convenient and flexible mode than it would be at the university. There is also the option of doing a top-up degree, especially in UK universities where it should take only anywhere between 9 months to 12 months to complete. Here, you have the best chance at getting even a 1st class degree.

What's  more, so many of them come with scholarships in forms of fee reductions and bursaries to make it very easy for intending students. If you think you might be interested, leave a comment, and we shall be glad to help.

    Sincerely,
    Blog Admin.

Still not found any Scholarships that suit your profile? or You think you do not meet all the Criteria?

While Scholarships are meant to target a certain niche of students, it is worth noting that there is never a perfect student. Over time, it has been noted that on most occasions, scholarships panels do not end up admitting students that meet all of their scholarships criteria, simply because its nearly impossible to be perfect at everything.

International students are particularly in an advantageous position because the majority of top universities are promoting diversity in their faculties like never before. Schools therefore would prefer to admit the average international student than not to admit any international student at all.

So, more often than not, meeting 70% of the scholarship criteria puts international students in a very good chance, if not excellent chance, of qualifying for the scholarship. Therefore, not leaving anything to chance and applying for suitable openings is the best way to stand a chance.

In order to check your eligibility and identify the right scholarship for you, find a placement questionnaire below. After filling the questionnaire, leave it as a comment in any of our posts, and we shall be glad to go through the scholarship application process with you.
